    Financial Renumeration for Nurse Prescribing

I completed the Supplementary and Extended Nurse Prescribing course in May 2007. I am having difficulty obtaining information regarding financial rewards for the additonal responsibility of nurse prescribing. I have contacted the RCN without success, at the moment I am trying to construct a case for salary increase and would be grateful for any information available from colleagues.

basically ther is non; it depends on your employer I'm afraid. I don't think you are alone in your plight but, unless there is guidance from the NMC and the unions it is unlikely nurse prescribing will attract any increase in salary despite the increased responsibility. Have you tried negotiiating with your employers?  make them see and understand just how much the role entails in respect of the work you do, and saves everyone time. No waiting outside a doctor's consulting room for a signature, patients not kepot waiting whilst you do so, and the next patient not being seen late BECAUSE of the time spent getting prescriptions signed.  Think you can work out a good argument to take to them. Good luck :o)

Opinions are just that - they are not the same for each individual, although some may be of the same mind. Martin :o)

To enable any increase in pay it is necessary to ensure that your job description recognises/addresses the change in circumstances. It is also wise to ensure that your appraisal and Personal Development Plan have been signed and authorise the increase/change in your circumstances. Agenda for change did not have details about prescribing unless it has changed in the last 2 years. If you looked at the latest information for A4C and accessed the job description for Advanced Practitioner you may find the details you need to help with this situation.

I do however know that many colleagues have not been able to gain any remuneration for obtaining their prescribing qualification.

Did your employer send you on the course or did you ask to go? I qualified in Sept 07 and I was given a pay rise because I asked for it and explained why I was asking-responsibilty/time saving/taking on minor illness completly and so on. However I also work for OOH at w/ends and there I have been battling to get any increase because I am not a nurse practioner, so I am paid the same as before. In this situation it is even more obvious how much extra resoponsibily there is ans how much of the Drs very well paid time I save!!.
